Chapter Eleven

No secretary. Koa knocked on Ihe’s door then pushed it open, not waiting for a reply. Ihe glanced up, then back to the papers on his desk. “What do you want now?”

“I need answers. You have them and you’ve been holding out on me. Why?”

“I don’t know what you want me to say.” Ihe pushed the papers into a folder on his desk, then stood and walked over to a file cabinet with them. He yanked the drawer open, shoved the folder into place and slammed the drawer closed before returning to his chair to stare at his brother.

“I want you to tell me the truth. How involved in this are you? Why would you even think to do something to the Fosters? It makes no sense.”

“I’m not involved in it at all, and I wasn’t trying to do anything to the Fosters except keep them safe.” He sighed and dropped into his chair. “I guess I didn’t do a good job either, but at least I tried.”

Koa pulled out his notebook and pen. “Tell me what you know. Start at the beginning and leave nothing out. We need to know exactly where we are so we can make this right. I’m not upset with you. I’m disappointed.”

Ihe took a deep breath and released it. “Okay. I received a call from an old friend.”

“Who was this old friend? You need to give me a name.”

“Halulu Mo`okini. You remember. We were in school together.”

“I remember. He was the one getting into trouble and you were the one getting the blame for what he did. How many scrapes did I get you out of?”

“I have no idea. A lot, but he’s still an old friend.”

“He called and said he needed help. Then he told me what he was up to. I was scared the Fosters would get hurt, so I agreed to help him to see if I could talk him out of it. In the end, there was nothing I could do. He pushed me away and drove off with them.”

Ihe shook his head and held it in his hands. “I know I should have called you as soon as I found out what he was doing, but I thought I’d be able to handle it myself. I’m sorry. I’ve messed up again.”

“Yes, you should have called, but it’s in the past now. We have to move on. Where do you think he would have taken them?”

“When I met him at the café up the road, he said the guy—must be LG—was his friend from off island. LG knocked him out and took off with the Fosters. Halulu said he has no idea where they are now, but I think he does. He was out at old shack we used to escape from Mom and Dad. Remember?”

Koa nodded.

“But he said no one answered the door. Still, they were there...”

“We have to find Halulu. Right now. Call him and ask for another meeting. This time I’ll be with you.”

“He’s not going to like it, but I’m sure he’s already waiting.
